FAQS
Answers to Common Questions
WHAT IS A DOULA?
Doulas provide emotional and physical support, in addition to evidence-based information and
childbirth preparation to expecting familes during the pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Included with doula support: prenatal visits, phone/email support, on-call availability(approaching due date),
support during labor and birth, assistance with optimal positioning, aromatherapy, massage,
herbal preparations, breastfeeding support, and additional community resources.
DO I NEED A DOULA AND A MIDWIFE?
Yes, I believe so! Doulas provide non-medical support to pregnant women and their families. We provide families with evidence-based information before and after birth to help them feel empowered and well-informed.
Midwives are medical professionals who focus on the health and safety of mothers and babies by providing prenatal and postpartum healthcare to pregnant women. In the birth space, you will typically find doulas refilling the mama's water bottle, preparing a warm meal, and doing hip squeezes. Generally, you will observe midwives checking the mom's vitals, listening to the baby's heartbeat, and preparing birth supplies. Midwives and doulas work very well together and drastically improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
WHEN SHOULD I HIRE A DOULA?
If you are considering hiring a doula, it is recommended that you reach out as soon as possible. Doulas are in popular demand and may be unavailable if you wait to book. Contact a few different doulas, interview them, and hire as soon as you can to make sure you have the best support possible.
